New Haven A former math teacher at Gateway Community College was charged Tuesday with second-degree harassment after police say he sent inappropriate messages to a student., 44, of Chestnut Court in Cromwell, who worked at the college part time, was arrested on a warrant after allegedly sending multiple unwanted text and social media messages to an 18-year-old female student, police said.The victim told police she had received sexually explicit messages since September 2016 and that she had made it clear to the sender that they were unwanted. The victim did not know who was sending the messages, but thought it could have been a classmate of hers, police said. With the help of the Gateway Community College Police Department, O’Toole was identified as the suspect.Once the complaint came to the university’s attention, O’Toole was placed on administrative leave at Gateway Community College, pending the outcome of the police’s investigation, said, Gateway Community College’s director of public affairs and marketing.O’Toole taught one college-prep math course per semester but has been relieved of his duties at the college, Gard said. There is a protective order in place forbidding him to return to the campus in the future, she said.O’Toole concurrently worked as the director of mathematics at. He was placed on administrative leave without prejudice Wednesday, pending the outcome of an investigation conducted by human resources, Hamden Public School Superintendent of Schools said. Goeler said this incident did not involve any Hamden Public School students and is unrelated to a previous complaint of inappropriate conduct at the high school.On Nov. 21, 2016, a parent alleged that a different teacher at had engaged in inappropriate conduct with their child.That teacher was placed on administrative leave without prejudice and the school district conducted an investigation, according to a statement issued by Goeler’s office in 2016.
The accused teacher no longer works at Hamden High School, Goeler said.
